... or can I just get an alignment first? I guess more to the point: Do new shocks (in OEM sizes) affect alignment?

This is for a 1998 Toyota Tacoma 4wd, 144k miles

Replacing the shocks doesn't affect alignment settings. Doing it before or after the alignment wont make any difference.

If you change shocks not struts the alignment settings do not change whatsoever. Shock absorbers control road variations and spring harmonics on the chassis of the car or truck. They are connected to a shock tower or frame at the top and to the lower A-frame or solid axle on the bottom in the front. In the rear their connected to a frame mount on the top and a welded on lower shock mount in the rear end housing or lower A-frame if it has an independent suspension rear end.
They are NOT connected to steering arms, tire rods, tire rod ends, center link pitman arm or ball joints or anywhere connected to rack and pinion steering.

Rebalance the tires, replace the shocks and re-align your tires all at the same time!
