I am thinking of taking a short-ish trip to southeast asia (perhaps nepal or burma) with some friends. I have traveled extensively, but never with a tour company. I have always been hesitant to travel with an organized tour, as they have generally seemed to be so focused on the big sights, and so uninterested in cultural immersion. On the other hand, my friends and I have only limited experience in southeast asia, and we thought this might be a nice introduction to some of the areas off the beaten track. Does anyone have any good tour groups to recommend?
In particular, we would like to company that is focused on young people (we are all in our early to mid 20s), and also adventuresome, small-ish, no luxury required...and no hyper-scheduled so we can also go off a bit alone sometimes.
Thanks for your help! Any recommendations are much appreciated. Also, any ideas on spots to visit off the beaten track (we are already familiar with the major tourist points in India and china)?

I can't help with the tour operators but there is a really classic place to visit that is really off the track. It is called the Gibbon Experience and it is in the Bokeo game reserve in northern Lao. Your hotel is in the tops of massive trees and you move from station to station by zip lines. Over rivers and valleys. One of the Tree houses is over a large water fall. Check out the web sites. Especially the testimonials. This is one of the most interesting places in the world to stay. Very edgy.

I gaurantee that you and your friends will have the best time ever and that it will be one of the trips that you remember for the rest of your life.

i could say stay removed from prepared excursions in case you % to circulate "off the overwhelmed music". Get a value tag on your trip spot and a return and forth instruction manual (lonely planet is frequently extraordinarily reliable), do some examining before you circulate there, plan your person excursion and you would be wanting a plenty greater suited time.
