Jimi Hendrix is the best. Innovative. No one will ever do what he did. There are people still trying to figure out how he rewired some of his guitars.

Jimmy Page.(led zeppelin) Studio stuff is great, but live stuff will blow you away.

Allen Collins (Lynyrd Synyrd)...if you need proof, listen to the solo in Freebird.

Jeff Beck(The Yardbirds)- If you want to hear some amazing guitar work..."The Train Kept A' Rollin"- The Yardbirds...has both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page

The best guitarist of this era would be Slash (Guns N Roses/Velvet Revolver) and John Frusciante(Red Hot Chili Peppers)

I think that to pick the 'best' is virtually impossible without putting some kind of qualification on it. But I will say this...

Rolling Stone did one of these a few years ago which had Jack White above Eddie Van Halen.

Jack White belongs nowhere on any of these lists!!!!!
