A newt or other wise called a newtria. It may be a type of salamander also, but there is another animal here where I live in Oregon that is named Newtria...otherwise called a newt. It is like a huge, mean rat. They like damp, cooler places...like dumps, under houses, by creeks, and of course whereever thier might be food.
They can get to the size of a border collie dog, and they aer meaner than all get out!!! If you do not have an aggressive dog a newt will go after and kill a dog. (Have had that happen aound here...thankfully not to my dog) But even more protective dogs can get pretty torn up from a newt fight.
They actually look like a rat. Long tail, hairless and just like a rat, thier faces are probably the least rat like characteristic, they are ugly and just look mean. (A rat can be cute.)
They also breed and populate like rabbits, so if you ever run into a problem with them hanging around where you live, it doesn't do much good to just shoot that one, you will have more following.

Salamanders, newts and caecilians (a legless, salamander-type animal) all belong in the order Amphibia along with frogs and toads, ancestors of the first aquatic vertebrates to begin to colonize that other earthly environment - land. Comprising a mere 350 species out of the 4000 or so known species of amphibians, salamanders and newts are found only in the Americas and in the temperate zones of Northern Africa, Asia and Europe.

Newts are small, usually bright-colored semiaquatic salamanders of North America. Newts have the ability to regenerate limbs, eyes, spinal cords, hearts, intestines, and upper and lower jaws. I hope this helped.
