My 96 chevy s-10 4.3 v6 2wd p/u has been giving me troubles starting for three months. It cranks over but doesnt fire. I checked the distibutor cap and and rotor, which the distributor cam was rusty so i used a fire brush to clean it off. DIDN'T fix anything though. I don't think its the plugs or wires because it drives fine after started and every forum i see with the same problem, people change them and still don't have results. I don't believe its the fuel pump, because i can hear it click on when i turn the key on and its beeen going on for 3 months.
Air filter is clean, I don't know where the fuel filter is. The only way I get it starte now is spraying carb cleaner in the intake plate. No service engine light on either.

The problem is, that the truck cranks over, but won't start. No check engine light on. And if the truck is still hot it will usually crank over right away. But it will crank over cold with carb cleaner.

Sounds like a fuel problem, if it starts on carb cleaner then the ignition system is good. I have had bad injectors on 4.3's before but not very often. Use a noid light to check for injection pulses at the injector harness, you can also just watch the base of the injector to see if it has fuel spray. the fuel filter is on the drivers side frame about even with the back of the cab (on the inside) and it could be your problem.

on GM systems the computer will prime the pump via a relay. after the engine is running the fuel pump is powered up via the oil pressure switch. the fuel pressure specification for a 1996 S-10 is 60 - 66 pounds of pressure. if the relay is bad it can make for difficult starting and explains why it runs fine after it is started.

13 psi specs are for older TBI systems you have a Vortech engine with a Central Fuel Injection system.

I have a 93 GMC Sonoma 4.3 TBI.
1. check for spark at plug
No spark= possibly bad crank/cam sensor or coil
Good spark= check injector pulse with noid light or test light/
No pulse is bad cam sensor, wiring or computer
2. check fuel pressure, no or little pressure = bad fuel pump or clogged filter

Fuel pump is worn out.
Yes, the one in the tank......

Sure, it turns on, but it won't pump at 13 psi.

ADDED:
The fuel filter is under the frame. Drivers side.
