I'm looking to buy a lizard soon and I'm doing all of the research, I'm just wondering what kind people would recommend. I've been looking at green ameivas and bearded dragons and a few other similar types.

Here's the questions I have and what I'm looking for:

The habitat I have is 36 inches long, 10.5 inches wide, and 17.5 inches tall. How long would a baby ameiva be able to stay in that habitat before outgrowing it? How about a bearded?

I'm looking for something friendly, which is why I've been leaning towards these types of lizards. I want something that's not skitterish and jumpy.

I'm a beginner, and willing to learn about how to take care of whatever type of lizard I get, but I'd like something that it isn't too difficult to take care of.

Any suggestions, or experience with ameivas or beardeds? I was also looking at water dragons and red headed agamas for a bit and am willing to reconsider those as well, any any other types people could recommend.

Thanks!

Hiya, a leopard gecko is a good 'beginner' lizard, they are easy to care for, don't mind being handled, don't need any specialist equipment/care, and they don't grow big.
Bearded Dragons are very cute and friendly, but they like space - especially when they are adults.
I wouldn't recommend Red-headed agamas, yes indeed they are very pretty, but they are an extremely nervous species of lizard - and as you don't want anything skittish I would advise against them.
Again, Water Dragons can be skittish and run off very easily - and these can run fast! They also need space.
Just keep doing research, I hope you find a lizard that's suitable for you.
Good luck.

Ameivas can be nippy and harder to handle. Beardies are sweet. Your tank would be OK for a baby for a couple of months. You'll end up needed at least a 55 gallon or larger for one adult (they should only be housed singly). Do lots of research--here are two good sites for beardie and other reptiles:
