There is a person who I am trying to locate to turn in, who has a warrant for their arrest. This particular person is online on various sites throughout the week. Are there any means of finding out where this person is physically using a computer to aid in locating them?

If they use dial-up the IP address is variable and can't be traced.

You can't..... period. Yes you can if it is a serious crime that you are part and party to. Meaning that you are the person who has been damaged. That requires serious police reports.

For the police to get this info requires a serious court order. The IP companies resist this thing at every level. Time and time again it has been denied in the courts as it would be wiretapping. The company itself would lose business as well.

Unless you are in danger or somebody you personally know is it won't happen unless you spend a great deal of money in court. Usually what will happen is that you will get charged or lose money at some point. Point is...... if you have money and the serious resources in court, for YEARS .... go for it. Even if that person is convicted they can still sue you.

It would be nice if everyone who wrote something or was easily found would be picked up. Today is not that day.

Some misinformation here - just because a person is on a dial up connection does not mean that their IP number can't be traced. Internet providers are provided with a 'pool' of IP numbers that are unique to the area that they are located.Even though your IP number changes at various times by the DHCP server - it is in range of that pool. It is easy to trace someone to the the ISP - it takes a court order to reveal who the IP number belongs to.

If you have a static IP address your ISP knows where you are.

If you have a dynamic IP address your ISP knows where you are at a given time.

In both cases the location info is private information. A properly executed warrant through applicable courts is required to release the info. If your need is strong enough to get a warrant - go for it.

Essentially the most someone can get out of your IP is your general location. They are not able to get your particular vicinity. Your ISP would have to give that up. They would require a warrant to stop that style of know-how. No longer even the police can do it with out a warrant. Do not worry about it.

not by yourself. the federal govt. has to get a warrant and subpoena sites that they have visited, then use that info to check of their whereabouts. if they use different wifi networks or use dialup then it is pretty difficult, and most depts. aren't going to waste their time on that person unless it is a serious felony warrant
