I no this sounds weird but i read in a history book that way back when there was like indian tribes and stuff that they would gather around the fire and everyone would yawn at the same time and then go to bed. So i guess that yawning just kind of evolved from that.....

I think it's because we have a low amount of oxygen in our lungs and by yawning we are intaking more oxygen.
There isn't any proof to say why we yawn, just that we do.

when you think about yawning or see someone else yawn your muscles in your jaw mimic the person or indeed animal. studies show that if you breathe through your mouth, not your nose, you will not yawn as much, i NEVER yawn, i am sooooo jelouse of you, i have never yawned, ever, in my life. i am not being a drama queen about it , i have never yawned. i try to look like i am yawning once in a while but its not genuine yawning. i open my mouth wide, think about yawning, .......nothing.

Yawning functions in two ways:
To revitalize your body with extra oxygen
and in the "contagious" type...
You're equalizing the pressure in your ears to the pressure in the room.
So, when faced with changing air pressure (you'll also notice it when you go up or down in elevation) everyone in the room yawns to "pop" their ears.

Everytime you yawn it cools off your brain, sorta like an air-conditioner, at least that's what I heard watching "Good Morning America" a couple days ago...

It has to do with a reaction in your brain. When you see someone yawn there is a reaction is your brain that makes you have to yawn as well.

when you yawn you take up a lot of oxygen, so the lack of oxygen causes more people to yawn
hey it sounds intelligent at least right?
