They do it purely for the points most of the time
Too many users are on here for the points, not to help others.
That is why you get so many one word answers, "I dont know" answers, and repeated answers

Most of the time, when I answer a question it says 'Be the first to answer'. I post my answer then I see answers other people were typing at the same time I was.
If I go to answer a question and see other people's answers, I give a thumbs up to whoever's answer comes closest to what mine would have been instead of answering the same.

A number of times when I go to answer a question there are no answers posted. Either I am really slow or there is a glitch in the system, because when I do submit my answer there are responses there that weren't when I started.

I don't usually read other peoples answers so I might be saying the same thing as someone else.

Sometimes multiple people are answering at once. So you don't know what the other answers are until after you've already posted your answer.

A lot of times they just read the question and click "answer this question" without reading any of the answers.
