Because we let them. They lie and cheat, and then either "spin" their way out of it, rationalize their actions, or simply count on us to forget (which we do). Until we develop a memory that is longer than that of a gnat, this will keep happening to us.
It could also be because we as a citizenry don't really care about what our politicians do, so long as it helps us individually. And until we live up to our own principles--in other words, until we stop lying and cheating in our daily lives--we will keep getting the government that looks like us.

Because if they told the truth when they canvased you would not vote for them. Imaging them calling and say, I will nothing for you. I will claim massive amounts of expenses. I will do every dirt thing I can get away with. I will cheat on my husband/wife and then promote family values as being above all else etc. Would you vote for them then? So that's why. They are a waste of space and taxes and no I din't think they care!

They are scumbags but people haven't woken up to fact that they are actually voting the worst criminals on the planet to lord it over them and tell them what they can and can't do. There are a lot of idiots in the world. It's all about power. The people are walking dollar signs and nothing more. They get away with all that they do because the people "dollar signs" do nothing about it because the politicians make you all soooooo comfortable that you can't pull your heads out of your asses for long enough to care about anything that they are doing unless it affects your bank balance.

you have got to be kidding, I bet you didn't know how much sleep our politicians lose just worrying about us,
without going into so much detail, most lay awake at night trying to figger out some untried method to screw the public tax payer, and did you say something about lieing and cheating?? don't you believe any of this junk about them lying or cheating , you see taking from some one who is wiling to give it to you is not stealing , even if you don't understand
why, you haft to give to them, for others it is a scam and you can be locked up for it but, not politicians they are immune,
now for the lying part, It is a trait they learn in law school, and perfectly legal as they can explain, why ask Clinton when he said it was not sex to get a B,J, MAN YOU JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND ,

Because the scale of power and the amounts of money available to them are so heady that few of them can resist
the temptation of becoming part of the status quo. It would take an unusual personality, walking the halls of power to see so much aggrandisement, and not be mesmerized by it.

We are all human with human flaws. Politicians MUST care about people or why would they get into politics? You don't honestly believe that politicians are just born evil, so must run for office to fulfill their evil agendas?
Why are you so anti-politician?

the kind of person who will shake all those hands, kiss all those babys, make all those speeches filled with all of those lofty promises, and allow their lives to be so thoroughly scrutinized probably are not necessarily qualified for the job that they are trying so hard to get.
