I have recently been debited twice for the same holiday by a well known internet holiday company. After asking several times for a refund of half the charge which is in 4 figures, I have still not had a refund. Where do I now stand legally.

You need to give them written notice requesting the refund. Until they receive that, you really don't have any standing. Go see an attorney.

If you paid by credit card you should be able to contact the cc company as you have more safety on your side
If not a letter explaining when you where charged and copies of statment backing up this will help - make sure you tell them when you expect this matter to be concluded and that if its is not resolved you will seek legal advise - solitictors letter is the next step

I think if you have seen the Carpets you ordered Cheaper in another CarpetRight you have every chance of a Refund, but if it is another Store I don't think they would honour it. Now, had you bought them at John Lewis their policy is that if you can buy it Cheaper at another Store they will give you the Carpets at the Price the other Store is selling them at. The only other thing you could do is to Cancel the Order telling CarpetRight that you can buy the same Carpets cheaper and Name the Store.

Yes I would advise them that they have a certain time ie 14 days before you report the 'theft' to the police and pursue a claim through a civil claims court.

You need to contact your bank. Get the charges reversed. Then turn the company in to the BBB.

That's one of the reasons why I don't use debit cards. Credit cards are better if you pay the bill before the due date. If you run into that kind of problem, you can dispute it.
