I would have to say Mitchum and Peck, the reason is they were first. Mitchum had to use his acting powers to come up with this mad man. DiNero used Mitchum to base his mad man. Try 'The Night of the Hunter' I think you will see what I mean.

Gotta agree with you. If you are basing your question just on the Max Cady character then it would have to be De Niro. But if the question is about the whole film then the original was better.

They are both good flicks, actually Juliette Lewis does a really good job as a vulnerable and naieve teenager. I usually go for the original, but in this case I actually liked the remake better.

I loved the original, but DeNiro is absolutely creepy as Max Cady, he makes the entire movie.

I gotta go with De Niro all the way he's a much better actor in it. Much more believable

they are both good and I love that movie.
but . De Niro is my choice for the best .
Juliette isn't a fave of mine but she was good anyway.
