I pulled the cord to start up my lawn mower and i accidentally let go. The cord shot all the way back to to motor. Now I try to the cord and it stops after a couple inches.

You can buy replacement rope. You don't even have to buy the specific part. Just some rope the same size as the rope that is in there. You will reuse the pull handle. Take the top off(where the rope is) but BE CAREFUL. There is a large coil in there that could be under some pressure. Thread the new rope in the way the old one was and you will have to rewind that coil. Then put in back together. Yes, it is a pain to do. That is the cheap way. Otherwise just take it to a small engine repair place. Most of them do this a lot and can probably tell you how much it will be over the phone.

Chances are you just have a kink in the rope. Remove the starter unit and straighten it out. If necessary get a new rope. It is not hard to do. You will have to wind the spring a couple of turns to put a preload on it.
