Say oh honey I love you and I think you look great. HUG her and kiss her. If you think her clothes aren't the right size anymore because she is purchasing too small a size, take her shopping and as you walk through the mall ( don't tell her why you are with her at the mall ) see something in a window you like and then ask her to try it on for her. If she chooses the wrong size, then choose another dress while she is in the dressing room, and choose one size up from her nromal size.
(I confess i saw someone else use this answer just like this and I think it is the very best answer I have ever seen and I wish my father had used it on my mother when she asked him that! )

what is the right answer to this? seriously. If you say yes, then she'll be mad. If you say no, she won't believe you anyway. You say "honey, I think you are beautiful. But if you are not happy with the way you look then go on a small diet..if that will make you feel better." TADA! Think that will work?

You should answer by saying "no honey you are not fat,you just make that dress look really small and I just love the way your feet sort of bulges out over the tops of your shoes.

It really depends on the person. Do you think your wife is asking you for an honest opinion, so that she can do something about it if you say 'yes'? Or do you think she is looking for reassurance? You probably know.
I'd say that, unless she's unhealthily overweight, it would be really nice for her to hear that you love the way she looks just as she is, and you'd find her equally attractive if she was fatter or thinner. (If that's true.)

You say: Fat is relative. Compared to movie stars? Yes, but they are all way too skinny. You only need to worry about whether you are unhealthy. And I want you to be healthy so we can live a long time together. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about it, but I love you just the way you are.

Honesty is the best policy, just prepared for additonal questions like: Are you serious?, Are you telling me the truth?, also comments like: I can't believe you think I'm fat!, or Just for that remark you can go to bed tonight by yourself.

Just be honest with her. If it DOES make her look fat, you should answer it kindly, with a "that's certainly not the most flattering outfit I've seen you in, but I really like when you wear....."
