japs are more reliable and better for gas mileage, but repair can be more costly.
REMEMBER: Everything breaks eventually, but good maintenence is the key to reliability.

Late 80s and early 90s model Japanese cars seem to be more reliable, but I discovered the hard way that you usually come out better financially when buying an American car. They are fairly reliable (most of them), and are much MUCH cheaper to repair. In my old Honda, I found that I didn't have to do many repairs, but I always spent atleast $100 on parts. In American cars, we spent less than $500 in eight years.

First of all Honda is not an american car. Have that in mind. As far as a good reliable car I would suggest a Toyota. If you ask me a Camry would be perfect but a corolla is just fine.

I am an owner of a mercedes benz(very high maintenance) a bmw (slightly lower cost than the benz) a 99 mitsubishi eclipse(outragously high maintenance, car is always broken) and a chevy tahoe( gets me where I am going, but costs some to maintain). I have been an automotive technician for 18 years and to be honest as far as general comfort, reliability, gas mileage, and overall build quality, I would take a BUICK!!!!
To bad I dont practice what I preach, but hey I have my mom driving one, she is on her third buick , 140,000 on this one now , she sold the other two at 200,000 miles.
Hope this helps!!

Japanese cars are generally pretty nice cars, toyota and mitsubishi are very good. A good american car company is Honda. They make reliable cars that last as well such as the civic.
For used cars I would trust Japanese made cars and Honda.

sorry to say, but Japanese cars by a long shot,, they have less problem and can run between 250-300, 000 miles, only if well maintained, only one but thing about these cars, the parts to repair are very expensive, and hard to get,, usually have to buy only at dealerships,, and parts are hardly ever in stock.

When buying a used car, Ive found that you should buy a car that still has its older versions on the road. For instance, to buy a used Honda would be wise because their are still many old hondas still running strong. As opposed to a Hyundai accent or Dodge shadow. Both very crappy cars.
