Access: "cannot update. database or object is read only"?

Whenever I try to add a new user account I get that error. But my settings say that my default open mode is shared. I am the only one with the database open. Why would I get this error?

Check your database files (either the front end back end or both) and ensure they are not read-only to the file system. If you just copied the db from a CD its automatically marked as read only -- change it.
