I've had checking with 3 dollars in the negatives and was able to withdraw a 600 dollar check and then 40 bucks more extra via ATM. How can this happen?

The bank wants you to go overdrawn so you pay overdraft fees. More money for them!

Only way I know of is "Overdraft protection", whereby the bank will loan you the amount of overdraft and charge you through the ying yang.
The other way is if you have cash in another account, savings etc. The overdraft will be transferred from that accout, but still an overdraft fee.

So you have overdraft protection? If so, you will be paying some fees and interest for the priveledge of going into an overdraft state.

Some banks over over draft protection expecially if you have good credit..Don't do this too often clear it up as quick as you can..Banks have no sense of humor..Seriously, it'll really mess you up if your not careful..

Why did you do that when you knew you only had $3.00? The bank will let you do that, but you have to repay all the charges.
