If we left the EU, we would be protected by World Trade Organisation agreements, which have been bringing trade barriers down for forty years.Switzerland has prospered without ever being in the EU. Like her, we could negotiate a free-trade agreement with the EU. As a free nation, Britain would have a lot more influence than if it were bound by artificial treaties. Britain is a member of the Commonwealth, NATO, the World Trade Organisation and G8 - that's hardly isolation? We are also permanent members of the UN Security Council. Our defences are secured by what are accepted to be the best fighting forces in the world. They are bolstered by NATO which keeps the British Government in charge of its own decisions. And as a final resort, we have an independent nuclear deterrent. Importantly freed from the shackles of Europe, a sovereign Parliament can make laws for the benefit of the British people not Brussels. We could repeal any costly or cumbersome EU legislation,we would regain our ability to vote out unpopular lawmakers.
Don't forget we governed our own affairs for centuries before we joined the EEC!!We could co-operate with the rest of the world - but from a position of strength.Under the rules of the Maastricht Treaty, Britain is committed to run its economy of the benefit of the EU as a whole - and not the British people. We have no power to veto punitive and costly 'Single Market' legislation. We are bound not to oppose economic and monetary union (EMU) - in fact, legally the British government is committed to the goal of a single currency and the abolition of the Pound. As our opt-out is only temporary, the European Commission laughingly refers to us as a "pre-in".It is only by leaving the EU that we stand to keep our currency and regain the ability to choose an economic policy that is best for Britain.Free from the EU, Britain has a REAL future...

Rejoin the Americans and become the 51st State of the Union. We'll probably have to get rid of the monarchy though. They can go and live in French Canada. The Queen speaks good French, so no problem.

UK is already American owned anyway and was once described by the late Nikita Kruschov as an "American aircraft carrier". Right on Nikita baby.

Edit: Ollie above is not thinking straight. Since we abandoned our kith and kin in both Oz and Nz to their own futures, they have found new markets for their products. They do not want us back, not now that we've got Frog-worm anyway.

We're outcasts in our own Commonwealth. Only the Canadians might forgive us since they don't give a damn really anway. Our only hope is the Yanks. One more time for old time's sake etc.

Guess what newspaper (comic) you have been reading! The simple fact is we are not leaving Europe and your 'choice' would lead to higher unemployment etc. As to loss of identity and freedom, do the Irish, Italians, Spanish, French, Germans, Greeks etc feel this - no way.

If we are able to frighten our over paid and unrepresentative governments into doing it, leaving the EU will bring an immediate benefit of about £84 billion that we do not pay to Brussels. We can then if the EU get anti and start a trade war with a blockade stop their imports to us, which are greater than our exports to them, so all told apart from the prats who insist on driving German made Chelsea tractors we will feel no difference. Our trade with the rest of the world, which is at a profit will continue, so the sooner the fat cats are paid off and we are independent the better. By the way the Balkanisation of England is at the insistence of Brussels who want to see England destroyed.

Revert to the time before the EEC. Free trade with the rest of the old Commonwealth - stopped on entering the EEC.
Those Countries in Western Europe that did not join are doing OK thank you very much with mostly a better standard of living than the UK.

Well keep our independence and freedom for a start.

Try and get back some form of national identity.

Determine our own laws.

There will be no downside to it as we will still trade etc with Europe, as well as most other countries, so the economy wont suffer.

Is there a downside?

Cleocat, nice reply but I changed it a bit

To stay as the United Kingdom and not be obligated to give a home to every Mohammed, Arshad and Jomo

Most people are not aware that when Turkey joins the EU will border on IRAN, IRAQ , GEORGIA SYRIA and ARMENIA. We only need trade agreements, there is no need to sacrifice sovereignty to cater for political demagogues who want to be part of a EU super power

fantastic oppertunities, the greatest of all being 100% dominion of our own destiny, no foreign yoke around our necks, we can biuld up everything, their are many things that have been sabotaged that can be put back, in certain trades like the rag trade that was sabotaged the motor biulding trade, take back our fishing grounds, the list is endless, above all we can bring back pride and lift up the hearts of the british
once again, and make sure they know this is their land and nobody elses, coming out is the greatest thing to ever happen to this country we have been prisoners for far to long.
