I have heat rash all over my arms and legs and belly. I read in "What to Expect When You're Expecting" that it is really common to get heat rash when your pregnant but it gives NO suggestions. The pharmacist said I cant take Benadryl...any suggestions to make the itchiness and redness go away safely? I am itching like crazy!! And it looks soooo icky! Thanks!

it can also be what is called PUPPS a rash that only pregnant women get that doesnt go away until you have the baby. it it is that take benadryl every 4 hours and cover it in calamine lotion. and take oatmeal baths that are as cold as you can stand it. use an ice pack on spots that are really bad. i am 35 weeks pregnant and i have it. it drives me up the wall it is from my shoulders down but the calamibne lotion is getting rid of it. it will come back but at least it wont be everywhere. it is hard to deal with but hang in there. dont use oily lotions and stuff because it makes it worse it has to be dried out and lotions like that mosturize the rash...good luck i know what you are going through and it sucks but you can do it.

It is NOT NORMAL and it could be DANGEROUS for your baby.

This answer is also for those answering this question that are also itching with out a rash .
Cholestasis of Pregnancy

The only rash like symptom you may have is where you have scratched so much that you make your skin bleed.
IT IS NOT AS RARE AS PEOPLE THINK

Itching during pregnancy especially in the 3rd trimester,
There is a risk to your baby, STILL BIRTH if delivered later than 37 weeks, ICP/OC carries and increased risk of premature labor, fetal and maternal hemorrhaging, fetal distress, and most importantly, stillbirth.

Please visit and READ Information at
www.itchymoms.com
or
Search the web for Cholestasis of Pregnancy or ICP
There is also a news report at www.wkyc.com and clink on the "Itchy Moms" story
Itching can be more dangerous than you think during pregnancy.
I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE...........

Not all doctors a familiar with Obstetric Cholestasis.
If you go to www.itchymoms.com you will see that most doctors will just brush it aside as a hormonal itch but the result of those pregnancies end up with a sad ending.
I believe it is better to be safe than sorry!!!!!!!!

Go straight to your DR and ask about Cholestasis of Pregnancy or ICP.

It is to do with your liver and pregnancy hormones.

I have had this with 3 of my 4 pregnancies.
All it is, is a simple itch that will drive you crazy that is the only symptom.

Ask to have your Serum Bile Acid Test (SBA)
tested this is the only test that will diagnose OC/ICP, it is a specialized test that can take a week or longer to get back.

Argue with your Dr if you have to, it is worth it.

Liver function tests (LFT) and blood counts DO NOT diagnose OC/ICP the only can help the diagnoses in conjunction with Bile salt tests .
An itch doesn't seem much but it can be FATAL to your baby if it goes undiagnosed.
The itching can be any where, I had it on my legs and arms at first.
I don't want to scare you but please realize this is very important

pregnancy #4 I started to itch at week 8

I have prescription heat rash creams, for allergies, but the one I like best is something called Sarna, in a white bottle with blue writing, Target carries it. My dermatologist had recommended it.

Cornstarch powder is good for heat rash; you might also get TOPICAL Benedryl cream if your doctor says its ok (you can see what the pharmacist has to say about that, as well). Good luck!

OMG. I am so sorry! I had that, too and it was miserable. The only thing I was allowed to do was to take "oatmeal" baths. They actually sell packages to put in a tub of water. It is made by Aveeno.
Best of luck!

a nice hydrocortozone cream or calamine lotion (the pink stuff) usually works for me.
