It sounds to me as though you are describing a bumblebee. The colors can vary, but they're really just a big bee. They're slightly more aggressive than a honeybee, but all in all, they won't bother you if you don't bother them.

And Cicada Killers don't actually kill the cicadas, the paralyze them, put them in suspension so their larva will have fresh food when they hatch... nature at work, providing for it's own.

If they live in the ground, I'm sure that's what you have.

If they don't live in the ground, you have those large Bumble Bees..Carpenter Bees..at least those would be my guesses...

Possibly a bald faced hornet. Let us know if this is it. If it is there is a large paper nest around. Might be late fall before you find it.

Sounds like a carpenter bee. I like to call them Bomber Bees because of their size. Very territorial, don't bite people, eat "elementary pencil" size holes in wood.

It sounds like a cicada killer, does it have a nest in the ground? If it does then its a cicada killer, they drag cicadas down the whole and lay eggs on them and the larvae eat the cicadas... gross isn't it?

Sounds like you are describing a female Carpenter bee. Here is a pic for comparison.

It could also be a Bumble bee:
