Well, in my case, I do it when it is incredibly hot outside, like right now; It is 100 degrees. If I open the side door in my garage and leave the garage doors cracked a bit, it lets the hot air blow through the garage so that the garage is not acting like a big heater that is draining the cool air from my house. Does it work? I am not certain, I know it at least helps when I go in the garage; it does not feel like a Sauna.

Other than that, I suppose the reason would be to let a pet travel to and from freely.

Could be to let a cat go in & out? Or maybe the door gets "caught" at a certain point. Also helps to air out the garage a little.

I prefer to look at it as partially open.

I do it for two main reasons. First, to allow fresh air in the garage. The second reason, keep know-it-all neighbors from looking in my business. If they don't know what tools I have then they can't ask to borrow them. I also don't want advice how the neighbors would do my projects.

They do that, either because they have a cat or another animal to let in an out out the garage, or they have bird cages or another animals in a cage in there and dont want it to die of heat.........or just to plainly keep there garage cool...
