Alright. I have been visiting this area now for 5 years or so. Same area about the same time of the year. (August). I saw this insect that looks a lot like some sort of scorpian, but cannot identify it. It has two long antenas and 6 legs. It has a stinger (or what looks like one) on its back end.
Pictures are at these links.

Let me know what you think.

It did hop around a little as well as crawl.
Do they sting and are they poisonous? I did not get stung, but was just wondering.

The shadows in the pictures interfere with the image enough
that I can't tell what it is for sure. However, it does appear to
be some sort of grasshopper-katydid type insect. If the
antennae were quite long it may be in the familyTettigoniidae.
The projection in the back is not a sting but an egg-laying
apparatus (female) or copulatory apparatus (male). If the
insect is an adult but is wingless then other families are
likely.

I'd agree it looks like some sort of cricket. The pointed projection at the tail end would be the ovipositor, not a stinger.
