I just watched a quite a few different videos last night. I never finished them, and I was going to watch em today and I get this message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
Any ideas? Some movies still work but quite a few don't. All of them are .avi. I've never had a problem before. I have the latest windows media player and the latest klie pack of codecs. I tried opening the movies in quicktime...no luck. I tried with divx player and it says its not a video track or something...I'm very puzzled. Has anyone ever had a similar problem. Restart didn't work, installed the latest codecs. Why would this stop working all of a sudden? I didn't touch my computer since last night and now the videos don't work.

I already tried this: http://www.cccp-project.net/
I tried the VLC media player.
I also tried using windows media player classic using the cccp project someone recommended already.
I'm currently doing a virus scan. I have no idea what else it could be.

If you played them before and they played fine(the specific video you're trying to watch) then I doubt the codec is the problem. If you have played other avi's and can't figure out why certain avi's are not playing, then you probably just don't have the proper codec installed. Not sure what videos you're trying to watch but perhaps there is some DRM in the videos that only allows you to watch the videos for a certain amount of time before they expire. If that is the case, you'll need to redownload the video. If it's just a codec issue, I would recommend the Combined Community Codec Pack aka CCCP. It will allow you to play just about every video thats out there. Here's a link to it.

I have no Idea how to solve your problem, but you could always use the video lan player (short: vlc) www.videolan.com (or type vlc player into download.com). It's able to work with almost every video format known to man and then some, only a few niche file formats are not supported, really, and if the movie doesn't work in their, but worked yesterday, you should most definitely update your anti-virus software, reboot in safe mode and scan the hdd that contains the videos excessively.
Although, you of course could just go and try to re-download one of the videos to check if the files were plain broken, of course.

your best bet is to redownload the videos or try the videos on a differrent computer to see if the videos are messed up. I had a similar problem, i just simply redownloaded the videos.
