Democrats and Republicans both favor big govt, big spending and lots of govt regulation. They differ on what they want to spend the money on, who foots the bill, and what gets regulated.

Democrats tend to want to tax and regulate business, and give the money to people. Republicans tend want to borrow money (increasing the debt), regulate personal conduct, and spend on the military and corporate subsidies.

Independent is not a party. It refers to anyone who is not in a party, or (incorrectly) anyone who is not in one of the first 2.

Liberal and Conservative are political and social philosophies -- they are not political parties in the US.

I think your assessment is rather skewed. Honestly, little difference exists anymore between Republican and Democrat. I have been both, and voted for both. Both Democrats and Republicans love the United States, and both Democrats and Republicans seek to serve the people--please note that exceptions on both sides exist. Listen to what the candidates say. Look at their history. ignore the sound bytes. Inform yourself. Cancel the bluster and ignore the bluff. Don't simply take the pundents word for it that so and so is a conservative, liberal, neocon, moderate, whatever. Read. Wake up America! We have a country to preserve!

The 1st 3 are parties... the last two are ideals.

Libs and cons exist in all 3 parties... actually, independent is not a party unto itself... it's like being agnostic... refusing to settle on just one idea.

Although there are more liberals in the democratic party and more conservatives in the republican party, it is by no means a hard, fast rule...

The first two have been bought by corporations, and have no important differences in what they do with power.

The last 3 are too small to be of use so far, as they exist as political partires only in a very few states. Most Americans aren't even aware of them.

I believe the definition of left and right was begun with the French.

Also it is the left and right of Jesus Christ.
