Sometimes there are hydras in my freshwater aquarium. until this point I didn't know that was possible. How did they get here? Months go by and I see none then I will find several. What are they eating, they are smaller than pencil lead? Are the significant in any way? Are they always there but usually eaten by my fish?

They are carnivorous.Give them Daphna to eat. They can eat mosquito larvae. Some of them have zoochlora alga as symbiont.

it sounds to me like you have misquito larvae. you need to treat the water. they may make your fish sick.
