I agree with you, we have become sloppy, just look around when your out shopping, I blame alot of it on knit clothing every one looks sloppy, even me and I want to look nice but always seem to go for whats comfortable, I remember my mom God bless her, she would dress up for shopping and appointments, she always looked nice. I need to start doing the same. I think we americans have become very lazy for the most part. Its ashame.

Because now, we don't have time to worry about that stuff. Also, I think we realize it was pretty silly to be that superficial. We're getting smarter now, I think.
Also, tattoos are a part of my Eastern Band Cherokee heritage. Just because the Euros didn't mark their skin or pierce their ears like we did, that doesn't make it alright to put it down. That's yet another thing we've come along with, letting people actually take pride in their cultures. Back in the 40s and 50s, if I had been alive, I wouldn't have mentioned that I was Native American. Now, I can without any problems.

Absolutely, they were - we were. As a child in the '40s my mother would dress up in Sunday church clothes to go shopping downtown. I wasn't required to wear a tie but that's all I lacked in the dress-up category when I went with her. On the rare occasion my dad wasn't working and went with us, he, too, dressed up - the whole boat, tie and all.
I don't expect that today, things are a lot more casual now but good grief, have you looked at how a lot of people dress to go shopping at WalMart or Target? I know these are not considered upscale destinations but they are a public place. I personally wear a nice pair of slacks and a clean, pressed shirt when shopping and real shoes. Most of my fellow shoppers wear t-shirts with their big belly peaking out below the bottom seam and the top of their too-tight shorts. And, their shoes or lack thereof are usually sandals or flip-flops. Sometimes the flip-flops don't even match!
My daughter says I'm too picky and perhaps she's right. Sometimes I think I may have lived longer than I should have. Casual I like; slovenliness and laziness I cannot tolerate.

Well, women were pressured to wear girdles, uncomfortable elastic garter belts, tight bras, layers of under wear, including slips and crinolines or hoop-slips (gag). They also were pressured to look alike-- a real "Smallville". the narrow pointed toes and high heels on their shoes, caused a lot of foot and back problems. We had to wear hard rollers in our hair, to bed, which made our hair ridiculous, and had to use toxic aerosol spray. Was THAT glamorous? Nah.
The gals these days dress the way they want , and seem to be, for the most part, pleased with being in their own comfort zone. I have a tattoo, wear pants more than skirts, now, and avoid heels like the plague. I still shower, comb my hair, and brush my teeth, etc. The man in my life for the last 7 years fell in love with me when I had absolutely no makeup on. I love it.

I am in my late 20's and I look at images from the 40's and 50's and envy the styles of the times - they were so beautiful and elegant, and not to much more flattering that low rise jeans and clinging t-shirts - if only young people now could see how many sins can be hid behind box pleats and tailoring.

Absolutely! Women enjoyed their femininity and it showed through their clothing, the way they held themselves and the way they accentuated their natural beauty!
The men, they had manners and were truly, gentlemen! Today, this mindset is all but dead!
We live in a very hurried, ME oriented world today. It has become hedonistic and egotistical! When this occured, out went a lot of beauty we once knew...self respect, respect for others lives and property and on and on.
It is sad to see what the lack of morals and values have done to this once, united country.

You are exactly right & what a great observation you have. I care but I have no idea what the others think. I like for a man to look masculine & a woman look feminine. Gosh, I must be getting old because the tatoos & body piercings gag me.

I understand what you're talking about, and it has nothing to do with looks, or fashion, or anything else so trivial. It has to do with the people we were. something younger people can't understand. It was a completely different outlook on life itself. A more romantic era. There is no romance today, only sex.

Maybe it's different, but I prefer people to just be themselves. There is more natural beauty in people than any cosmetics, or posturing can give. I'm glad that young people are comfortable with their just being human and natural.
