I hear you- so many people are taking medicines to counteract the side effects of other medicines! Yuck!
I would look at Nikken's products. They have some great products that have helped many people control their cholesterol. Follow the link below, go to Products, and I'd suggest looking at:
- Jade GreenZymes under Nutrition (a woman I know did nothing different but take these, and her cholesterol dropped significantly- the doctor asked her how the heck that happened, but didn't believe the significant drop was a result of this supplement)
- Magsteps under Rest & Relaxation (good for healing your body as a whole- Nikken's first product and still one of the most popular)
- Optimized PiMag water under Environment (you'll be shocked what a difference this healthy water makes!)
- the multi-vitamins, liver, & garlic supplements under Nutrition
- the Sleep system under Rest & Relaxation (your body can heal itself better if it goods good rest)

Red Yeast Rice contains an element very similar to a statin on the market today but is a natural alternative used for centuries in Chinese medicine (http://www.vitabase.com/supplements/cholesterol/redyeastrice-vb.aspx). Policosanol is another natural alternative that has been around for a few years. It comes from the coating on sugar cane. (http://www.vitabase.com/supplements/cholesterol/policosanol.aspx)

Your wife is wise to avoid statin drugs. They have ghastly side effects, and they treat the symptom, not the cause. Pharmaceutical companies make their money by creating meds to address symptoms like high cholesterol or bone loss, and often do more damage than good.
Cholesterol is not well understood by the medical profession. The correlation between elevated cholesterol and heart attack or stroke has little or no evidence to support it. Every cell in your body needs it - including your brain - and if you do not consume enough in your diet, your body will manufacture its own to make up the difference. In short, high cholesterol may not be any cause for alarm. I don't pretend to be an expert but I have done a huge amount of research on this topic and ended by convincing my doctor of my point of view.
There are no alternative or natural medicines to lower cholesterol. However, if you are still convinced that there is cause for concern: staying active will help to lower cholesterol as well as improve the cells' receptivity to glucose. In other words, a minimum of a brisk 30-minute walk daily may lower your wife's cholesterol as well as her blood sugar.
To manage blood sugar, avoid all sugar (and sugar substitutes, except for stevia) and eschew all grains.
To help lower cholesterol through diet, you may find the following foods and supplements helpful, although if your wife is already eating wisely, adding specific foods to her diet will have little effect.
- oatmeal
- wheat & oat bran
- 4-6 T. lecithin
- 1-2 T. olive oil
- blueberries, apples, almonds, beans, garlic, carrots, yogurt
- 1000 mg. inositol & choline
- 2 capsules cinnamon vera (Ceylon cinnamon) with meals, morning and night
- also: some animal fat is necessary for optimal health. We have become obsessed with the "fat-free" concept - again with no solid evidentiary support. Animal fats in modest amounts have a place in human nutrition.
Useful website: mercola.com. Type "cholesterol" in the site search box to find several helpful articles.

I have used and recommended flax seed oil with excellent results. I take two capsules a day-one in the morning and one at dinner and my cholesterol went down 50 points in six months without altering my diet. My whole family has bad cholesterol problems-our body manufactures it. I don't want to take medication that will damage my kidneys-like my mom and dad and a few others.

Oatmeal every morning, I use olive oil in my cooking, which has really helped with my cholesterol, it went down quite a bit, garlic helps, she can take garlic tabs, and there are other things in a health food store that are specifically for cholesterol that she can take. It sounds like her diet is pretty good, anything high in fiber is the best bet!

Cleanse the liver. I met people, (very skinny) that did this cleansing and they eliminate a lot of fat from the yr liver and gallbladder. Go to google, liver cleanse, and you will find a recipe , how to do it, with epsom salt and Apple cider, and olive oil with graph fruit juice. i did that cleansing 5 times and it helped me with cholesterol and migraines. After that cleansing, use aloe Vera juice a good brand, don't go cheap,(will help a lot with the diabetic problem to) and omega 3-6-9, Kyolic garlic, and after each meal Apple cider vinegar(2 tablespoons). Wish you the best.
