As the other posters have said originally gran tourismo, but now is used to denote a tuned up version of a run of the mill family car i.e Volks Wagen Golf GTi (the original)

A bunch of engineers at VW projuced a prototype Golfs of their own volition. The 'i' was combined with the age-old 'GT' ='sporty', in effect, to create the GTI. The actual meaning of GTi is Grand Touring Injected.
