1 Jimmy Page(if hendrix had lived longer he'd be #1)
2 Jimi Hendrix
3 Eddie van Halen
4 Eric Clapton
5 Steve Vai (speed/classical genius)
6 Yngwie Malmsteen (invented the randy rhodes style of guitar BEFORE randy rhodes did)
7 Joe Satriani (taught steve vai)
8 Jeff Beck
9 David Gilmour
10 Kirk Hammet
11 The Edge (U2..unique chord style)
12 Micheal Schenker (scorpions/UFO..highly influential on metal)
13 Angus Young
14 Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple)
15 Steve Howe (Yes)
16 Ronnie Montrose
17 Randy Rhodes
18 Joe Walsh
19 Glen Tipton/KK Downing
20 George Harrison
Mick Mars is a 100% talentless hack that doesn't deserve to be in the top 500
Zakk Wylde is the WORST of Ozzy's 3 guitarists
Alex Lifeson is NOT the talent in Rush..only a average chord player
Slash is over-rated
Allman
Gibbons
Vaughn
Townsend
Guy.

Nice thing about this question is there are no wrong answers:

1. SRV
2. John Sykes (Tygers of Pan Tang, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, BLue Murder..)
3. Jimmy Page
4. Steve Vai (Frank Zappa, Alcatrazz, Whitesnake, David Lee Roth..)
5. Yngwie Malmsteen (Steeler, Alcatrazz, Rising Force..)
6. Eddie Van Halen
7. Randy Rhoads
8. Michael Schenker (MSG, Scorpions, UFO..)
9. Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions, solo artist..)
10.Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy, solo artist..)
11.Steve Howe (Yes, Asia..)
12. Eric Clapton (like any list of guitarists could not have him on it..)
13. David Gilmour
14.Jimi Hendrix
15. Alex Skolnick (Testament, Savatage..)

At this point I could put so many others that most people probably haven't heard of, and the members of this list could be rearranged on any given day.. except for SRV. He's just miles ahead of everyone else in my book.

I'd have Brian May and Ritchie Blackmore in there too, but overall an excellent list. I'm especially glad to see David Gilmour in the top five.

I don't agree at all but you made a list of good guitarists all the same. (Zakk is also in Lamb of God and Gilmour, although he is awesome, he shouldn't be that high. You have missed out quite a lot of guitarists)

Chuck Berry (himself)
Carlos Santana

You've got the right idea!
The only two that I don't see that I was thinking of is Jeff Beck and of course, Carlos Santana. But I definitely agree with the others........
