because resentment doesn't hurt them, it hurts you

I heard a saying once that I believe is so true. It says that "harboring unforgiveness, is like drinking poison and then waiting for the other person to die." When you don't forgive you are also allowing that person into your valuable brain space, to take up your time and diminish your quality of life. Don't let an offender have that kind of power over you. The Bible tells us we have to forgive or we won't be forgive. That's pretty much, good enough reason on it's own, but when you do forgive you help yourself much more than the offender. God bless!!

You have heard it said that to err is human; to forgive is divine. It helps to remember that people only hurt others when they themselves are in pain. When we can recognize the other person’s suffering, our heart can open in compassion. We can also remember that at some time or another, we too have hurt someone through our own unskillful action. Only love can heal the rifts caused by a hurtful deed. Forgiveness holds immense power because it mends separation. It moves us towards the unity and love that lie at the core of our being. It is a fundamental part of the healing process.

"Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future."

I'm the kind of person that forgives easily because it's human nature to screw up and we all do it from time to time. No one is perfect... NOW I do have a cousin that has done me dirty over and over again and there does come a time when I have to draw a line. She enjoys watching others suffer and I would have let it go but she keeps twisting the knife and now I'm ready to put her lights out. I won't ever forgive her only because she keeps hurting me.

It's hard work carrying around anger or resentment. Now, this is not to say you should jump right to forgiveness and forget about the anger. The feelings of anger need to be experienced and processed. But anger held for too long just wears down the soul and stifles life.

Hanging on to your anger about something from the past only hurts the one who does the hanging! If you can forgive, you can get over it and get on with your life. You can be much happier without the weight of getting even on your shoulders.

Because everyone makes mistakes. I always forgive, but never forget wrongs done to me. If someone does me wrong and wants to make amends, I'll accept their apology, but I will always be on my guard in case they do it again to me.
