my cell phone is so trashed right now, and i dont mind gettinga new number, so can i just go to a different company and get a new contract? or will they know that i still have a balance at a different carrier?

I don't think they will know but that balance will not just go away, it will be sent to bill collectors who will harass you daily and sometimes nightly to get their money for the client...plus it will go on your credit record and cause grief for you later on when you try to apply for anything to do with credit...pay your bill off no matter if you stay with the company or switch..if you switch try to set up a payment plan with the other company.

You're legally obligated to pay your old bill and any early termination fee they assess. Check with your current provider and see if they have any special phone ugrade programs for you, or if they'll let you trade your trashed phone in for a better one.

No, the old phone company will still know, even if you just leave.
When you bought your cell-phone you gave the access to your address and other things...they can pretty much hunt you down.
