It's possible if it's a file like filename.txt.exe. The last extension is a .exe file, or executable file. This can contain a virus. However, I don't know of any text files being a virus, spyware or anything like that. The file type, whatever it may be, has to contain executable code.

Brandon

.txt files can be virus'. Most programs use a .txt file to run so it is possible for a virus to be attached to a file your friend wants to send you. Viruses don't usually come with e-mails unless they have a attachment. So no need to worry about them!

Possible. Hackers can disguise file types. So, even though it has a .txt file extension, it can actually be an executable file in disguise.

.txt files cannnot be executed like a .exe file. It may also be a good idea to ask him if he actually sent that file and what it contains.

Lol. It can be double renamed to look like a text file. If he put double extensions on it. Text files can definently be viruses though. Especially if they are saved as cfg.

no.
If it is a text file by itself (nothing else came with it) then you're okay. If its with a whole bunch of stuff (like scripts, batch files, or an exe than i wouldn't run it unless you know what you're doing).

stuff to look out for...
.vbs
.cmd
.bat

and any activex controls or addons that try to install themselves without your consent.
