Yes !! In fact the most recent copy of "Model Railroad Planning" a special edition of Model Railroader magazine has ads and articles

"3rd PlanIt" is a 3D auto-cad program for all scales ($130): http://www.trackplanning.com

"Trainz 2006" another 3D auto-cad program that also allows you to test drive your trains: http://www.auran.com/trainz

Atlas has a FREE software 2D program that allows you to put down THEIR track products: http://www.atlasrr.com/righttrack.htm

I would DEFINITELY use a product even if it costs $150+... I just think of the SAVINGS I would have made if I had been able to TEST my N-scale RR before I started construction !!

Another (cheaper) thing is to go to your hobby store and buy TWO of Model Railroader Magazines BOOKS:
"Realistic Model Railroad Operation"
"Guide to Freight Yards"

Here http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=416 you can find my favourite site about train models. If you are a beginner consider buying their ebook with a step by step guide to plan and build your first model railroad.
