I star a question for one reason and one reason only. If that question is one that I want to be able to find my way back to, or use to help answer another question, it gets a star. For instance, I see about three to ten questions dealing with wanting to learn to play guitar every day. These people all want pretty much the same thing. They want links to online sites with information, sometimes visual, or online sites that will help them make a decision as to which guitar they will eventually choose as their first. The first few times I answered that question, I went to the sites and copied the http addresses down and pasted them in the answer. Now, I just paste the http site of the question I have already answered (or several) and the questioner gets my perspective, as well as everyone else's that contributed to the post.
This way, I get to help the person without going through the entire process over and over again. Stars for me are bookmarks. I don't facilitate star collecting, and I don't use them as "kudos" (thumbs up are for that) but I do use them as a valuable reference aid for myself. Hope that helps.

I don't know because I've never starred a question
But since reading some other answers, I would probably star it if I also wanted to know the answer or if it were very interesting

I STAR a question if I want my Contacts to see it, if I'm genuinely interested in more answers for that question so the STAR helps get the question noticed by more people. Or, because the question is unique, funny, or poignant.

If it's a question I wanted to know the answer to, or wanted to see what people would say, I'd star it.

The star tells me I answered the question. At my age I forget things.

I star a question when I want to bookmark it, so that I can use the advice in it at some future time. When I need the information all I have to do is go to my starred questions, and boom, I have it at my disposal.

If they ask me to.. or if its a good question and I want to read what other people will have to say.. so I star it so that my contacts can see it and maybe answer it =]
