Yes, your regular hydralic (foundation) brakes will work reguardless of the ABS system. The only exception to this is a fluid leak in the pump unit.If you are losing fluid, have it checked out NOW!!!
If you ever seen the all-state commecial where they slow down the film as a crash is about to happen. if you look closely, you will see the wheels start,stop,start,stop.....
This is the ABS system at work. It pulsates the brakes during hard/emergancy stops to avoid wheel lockup and lose of vehicle control.
When the ABS module detects a problem with in the system, it is deactivated and the light is turned on. Your regular brakes still work but the wheels will lockup during a hard stop.

The ABS system has nothing at all to do with the base braking system on your van except shared fluid, rip or tear almost any ABS component from your van without disrupting the brake fluid flow and the light comes on and the ABS will not function any longer.

I am curious why you would want to dectivate a safety feature. If the ABS light is on, then the ABS has already deactivated itself due to a problem with the system. If the light is off, then look in the owner's manual.

you can pull the ABS fuse or relay and the brakes will still function but on a hard stop the wheels will lock up and skid. the ABS system pumps the brakes to avoid skidding on wet or dry roads so unless there's something wrong with the ABS you shouldn't mess with it.
john probably has a bad master cylinder.
