First of all, this question should be in Biology or Zoology.

But here I go: A basilisk (talking about the real animal and not the mythical creature) is like a big lizard, although slim built, that lives in Central and South America. They eat insects. Their most astonishing characteristic, is their long legs and long widespread fingers, that allow them to run at high speeds, standing on their back legs. They can even run over water for short periods of time because their fingers are so widespread.

The thing takes off running on all fours and just prior to hitting the water will raise up on its hind legs and hold its upper legs behind its back. The lizard runs across the surface of the water using its hind legs and it is just sheer speed that prevents it from simply sinking. The basilisk is just a really fast lizard.

They move by opposing legs, right front and left back, left front and then right back, the tail swinging in opposition to the back legs.
