Many single people are teased or even harrassed for not being married, even when there are circumstances beyond their control, while same sex couples fight to have the same distinction, and some push for an even narrower definition. Is marriage outdated in general? If not, what is the purpose of marriage? License for sex? Monogamy contract? Protection of children born within it? Legal right to adopt, pay lower taxes and add someone to insurance? You decide.

Marriage has two different separate unrelated purposes.

It is a dedication of love and commitment, celebrated by the individuals and their community (possibly including religious ceremonies).

And it is a legal status that conveys many hundreds of specific legal and contractual benefits between the parties.

Under most current laws, children are equally protected regardless of the married status of the parents -- so that's not a factor. Nor is the "monogamy contract" -- that is not something the govt can enforce, and private individuals can do that just as effectively on their own.

Some believe marriage is all about "my rights"

In a way, they are right....but not quite. Marriage is about GIVING UP "my rights" for the greater good of children and society at large. People give up their rights to do whatever they want, and they make a legal agreement to become a foundational building block of society.

As a society, we have prospered. Liberty has given way to freedom...which has given way to liscentiousness and the belief that individual rights trump the greater good. Parents believe that individual fulfillment trumps family stability, and children grow up in pain and confusion. There is no discipline, no love, and no self-control. Soon, according to history, the society will collapse and fall prey to totalitarianism as people fear for their safety in such a society.

We need to decide upon a foundation for our society. The monogamous two parent hetero family produces good results for a society. Different groups have their freedoms, yes. However, dislodging the foundation makes the house crumble, no matter what your philosophy or your faith.

Of course, another question is, why do so many balk at marriage. I could never picture myself saying to my girlfriend, " I love you more than I can make you believe, I'd like to live and have sex with you, but no way do I want to be legally bound to you ". Very romantic
Because marriage seems old fashioned to some, we have couples breaking up right and left. Kids are confused and are on a fast downslide. No one is interested in education and the trades, it's all sex, booze, and drugs.
The percentage of marriages that held until the kids were mature and on their own , as compared to live togethers until the kids are fully mature, is greatly in favor of marriage.
The best arguement in favor of marriage is that it worked for centuries. No one will disagree that the days of marriage were gentler more human, kinder days than now.

As far as I am concerned the main benefit is or should be is protection of innocent children.
If your are able to enjoy whatever else that comes with marriage, more power to you.
Do not knock marriage simply because it has not worked for some. There is nothing more negative. I readily admit that there are others whose married lives are much better than mine. For that reason I cannot be against the whole idea of marriage.

Marriage is over rated and often times ruins relationships. Men and women seem so miserable and imprisoned in each other. If you have a great thing going with a guy or girl, why spoil it? You two have each other - that's all that should matter, and does matter at the end of the day.

marriage is a holy and sacred contract that should never be broken, sure some people are mean to their spouses, but when this happens they have broken this holy contract, try listening to your marriage vows, they are sacred if you are any kind of person other than a animal, and there is no room for same sex marriages period, so why make a mockery of a holy and sacred institution, " contract,"

i, personally dont see the greatness of marriage, its just a law thing. and in some religions, you need the get the sacrament of marriage, other wise you're living in sin. other than the tax benefits and other law-related things that marriage is associated with, i dont see the big deal.
