So if I am reading your question right, your car was just running and then quit all on its own?

Were you driving it at the time? Were you just at an idle? Will the car crank back over?

Your problem could be any number of things, but its pretty hard to try and help without more information.

You could have a dead battery or faulty alternator, which would prevent your car from getting spark.

Also, there is a reset for the fuel pump. It is tied to an inertia switch which is typically activated if you are involved in a collision with something, and will turn off the fuel pump as a safety measure. The reset switch is either in the trunk on the drivers side, or down by your feet on the drivers side, depending on the year of your escort.

I take it, it will not start now? How long has it been? I am betting if you let it sit for about an hour and then go out and try it, it will start right up. From there I would go to the nearest auto parts store and pick up a fuel relay for it. My 90 Taurus had the same problem when it got hot. I replaced the relay and the problem went a way. as far as the reset for the fuel pump, it's located in the trunk opposite of the fuel cap.

Look in the trunk, there is a reset for the fuel pump under a little flap of carpet, I believe it's on the left side, not sure there, turn your key on and listen, if your fuel pump is working you will hear a whirring sound for a second or three then stop, this will happen everytime you turn your key on, do not attempt to start the vehicle just listen, then you will know if the problem is there or not.

Does it turn over now? Does it seem to be turning over FASTER? Escorts can break the timing belt ( I believe they have a belt, not a chain ). it's a fairly common problem with them. 50k miles, BETTER replace that belt! If it breaks, the motor will turn over much faster than normal trying to start it. You can damage the valves if they're in the wrong position, possibly.
Anyway, it could be that, or you ran out of gas, or your fuel system is not working. Get some starting fluid, and squirt it into the air cleaner, if it doesn't try to fire, it's not a fuel issue, could be electrical or the timing belt.

There are about a hundred things that can be wrong. Nobody can possibly make an intelligent guess since you didn't provide any details. Like, is the engine turning over when you crank it?
