Artificial ponds can actually be a benefit to the environment where they are merely used to conserve water.
Where they are used to raise foreign life forms of fish or plants, and if there is any chance that they will overflow, leak, or the dam will fail, where the foreign life forms of fish, plants, or whatever can escape the immediate pond environment, yes, they can be a hazard to the natural environment.

Not sure what would make a pond "artificial" but I have a small pond that serves as a home to frogs, a turtle or two, several kinds of fish and feeds at least one or two great blue herons occassionally. It is surrounded by shrubs that provide cover for small critters and it serves as a water source and "bath" for the birds. It is also a food source for bats and swallows who like the insects down there. So what's the downside????

i would have thought they were good for the environment cos it can become a habitat for creatures in the wild. If the pond is made out of recycled materials it would make it even more environmentaly friendly :)
hope that helped!

MY PONDS PROVIDE A HABITAT FOR FROGS AND WATER FOR BIRDS.
AS A BOY IN THE SIXTIES, I HAD A TREMENDOUS CHOICE OF PONDS TO CATCH TIDDLERS IN. I VISITED MY OLD HAUNTS A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO AND COULD NOT FIND A SINGLE POND. THE GARDEN POND, THOUGH A POOR SUBSTITUTE IS ALL WE HAVE FOR WILDLIFE IN MANY CITY AREAS.

They represent a change.
Good or bad depends on how you view the inhabitants of the new nitches created.
Frogs, ducks, fish - Good.
Mosquitos, leeches - Bad.
