Everyone has their own pet peeve, and I expect you'll get many great answers.
My own ears perk up when I hear "less" when "fewer" should be used. e.g. less traffic is fine, less cars is not.
There is such a thing as A car.(cat, carpet, etc)
There is no such thing as A traffic (sand, sugar, etc).
So the rule is, if you can say "a" something, diminish the quantity by using "fewer", otherwise, use "less".
