Most salaries would not make anyone rich because of high taxes . For example, a $400,000 in California would net $250,000, and the payment on million dollar home (modest in CA) would be 50 % of your salary .

When you have enough money to burn and then some to spend you're rich…
Meh, a cool million a year.
It all depends on the location. If you live in Schuylkill County Pennsylvania and earn 200,000 a year, you’re filthy rich! That same 200,000 wouldn’t buy you much if you lived in an affluent section of San Francisco.
Truly, you’re rich if you have a spouse, children, and friends that love and respect you. If you don’t believe me, watch Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Depends on what "rich" means...talking just money? ...heck used to be a hand full of millionaires was rich....now it's billionaires and there's tons of them.
I don't do Gucci purses and I don't spend 5 years of someones yearly income for 1 dress for the evening......don't do 400.00 hair cuts.....I'm poor.....rich has become SO rich....it's beyond what I would consider humanly decent. But I feel rich that I can live in a house, I have a car and food and am for the most part healthy and so is my family. No....it's not a big house...it's a used car....it's not steaks....and I still have to make decisions as what's wanted and needed.....seriously....in the grand scheme of things.....I'm richer than the richest...

Being rich means having way more than you need. A house so big you don't use all the rooms, and maybe 2 or 3 other big houses. More cars than you can drive. More clothes than you can wear. More money in investments than you can spend in 3 lifetimes, etc. There are many many people like this in the country, and they are rich.

It depends on where one lives. It takes a lot more money to live comfortably in New York City than it does where I live--in rural Wisconsin--much less to be considered rich. I think my husband and I would feel rich if we made 100,000 a year--but it wouldn't be so much money that we wouldn't have to still pay attention to how much we were spending. If you talked to the truly wealthy, they probably say you have to have 100 million (or something outrageous like that) to be "well-off."

Q -- "What is your definition of being rich in the United States?"
A -- Having enough money socked away to be able to BUY a luxurious, ocean-view stateroom on a cruise ship that sails all over the world, all the time, and to be able to have lobster room service to one's heart's content, without limit -- for the rest of one's life.

My definition of 'being rich' in the U.S.A. is being able to breath clean air; express myself without fear of government retribution; enjoy the beauty and solace of a babbling brook or wonderful waterfall; being allowed to worship as I please; walk through a forest; catch a fish in a shallow stream; thrill to the beauty of a majestic mountain; pursue any occupation I so choose; watch the absolute miracle of child birth; care and nurture my children to become polite, respectful adults; vote, or not vote, as I see fit; and wonder at the greatness of the universe by simply looking up into the sky. That's the kind of wealth money can't buy! -RKO- 08/12//07

assets wise, rich now begins at about 10 million, not counting the house you live in.
income wise, you need to average 1,500,000 a year to be rich these days.
