Ok, so my car started fine this morning, went to church . When i got back to my car about 90 minutes later the car was completely dead. Not even the dome light. I get someone to jump it. When I get back to get ready a small glow in the dome light. Jump the car (when we connected the cables my friends car didn't even dip in RPM's) the car started. Drove it 10 minutes home, not much time to charge a battery but I wasn't sure if the battery could still hold a charge so I tried starting it. It started fine after only charging 10 minutes. Went to my car an hour later with a battery charger. When I first hooked it up the needle started at 50% and within a minute was at 100%. That didn't make since. Could it have been a fluke? Should I just go ahead and change the battery? I travel an hour to work and would hate to get stranded at the same time why waste money if it seems ok?

How old is the battery? If it's more then 5 years I would change it. If it's only 2 or 3 years old I would swap out the battery cables. If you change out the battery because of the age I would do the cables as well. It give you the best possible connection replacing the cables with the battery and your not going to have to worry about other issues arising from it. Honestly from what you described it sounds like a bad cable.

Watch how long the battery charges. If the charge starts dropping off after less than an hour, the battery is bad. 5 years is about as much as you usually get out of one. If it's old, make sure the alternator is putting out enough voltage and replace the battery. Have good tight, clean connectors on both ends of the cables and be at peace.
You'd need to be able to use an ammeter to check for something drawing the battery down while the car is off.

Even more weird!! In Colorado on Aug 8, 2007: my car battery (never any trouble) and 3 neighbors (within 4 houses away) all car batteries died the same morning and then another friend 40 miles from us had the same phenomenon with 2 other neighbors...maybe the extreme heat from the summer is draining the batteries? Never a a trouble before.

Think your cables are just dirty, if yo clean the ends it will be fine. I have had these same symptoms before and that was the problem.
