When I boot up, the screen displays a magnified view with fuzzy edges on all displayed.
In Control Panel I change the 'settings' from the default of 640x480 to 1024x768 and it stays for the duration of current use but defaults when a restart or reboot is called for.
Any help gratefully accepted.

Depending on what caused this issue to start, like random event or you installed a new graphics card, there can be several possible fixes.
If you didn't install a new video card, you can use System Restore to attempt to correct this issue. Follow these steps:
1) Goto the Start Menu
2) All Programs
3) Accessories
4) System Tools
5) System Restore, follow the wizard that comes up, select a day before the first time you experienced your display problem, and allow the system to reboot and finish restoration.
If the options above do not correct your issues, try the following:
1) Right click anywhere on your desktop that isn't occupied by a shortcut and select properties
2) Select the Tab called Settings, adjust your resolution and color quality here and press Apply at the bottom
3) Press the Advanced button near the bottom of the Settings window
4) in the new window select the Monitor tab, locate the Screen Refresh Rate drop down display and select 60hz if it isn't already selected, press Apply, then press Ok to close the window, press Ok at the settings tab window to close that.
If none of the above correct your issue, it sounds like your computer has lost the driver for your video card, or you installed a new video card and have not installed the correct drivers for it, to verify this:
1) Goto the Start Menu
2) Right Click My Computer and select Manage
3) In the Computer Management window locate and left click Device Manager from the left column of choices.
4) Observe the right window, look for any catagory that is expanded already, most probably you will see a yellow ? next to a component that is probably your video card. If all the catagories are compressed and not open, then there is a problem with your video card and you might need to actually replace it provided your motherboard supports an addon video card option.
If the problem occurred after you installed a new video card and did not install a driver for it, you will need to determine whether the card is an ATI based card or an Nvidia based card, you can goto either http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html for ATI based cards, or http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp for Nvidia based cards to download the most current drivers for your operating system and video card type.

i'm assuming this may well be a used computing gadget If that's a sparkling one, do no longer walk, RUN, to the place to procure it and insist a substitute or your a reimbursement. What you're describing isn't stable information. you ought to have an argument on the mummy board. If that is used: i'm undecided what you paid for it and that i do no longer understand if it's going to be nicely worth it to take it to a keep. Laptops, extra often than no longer, value lots to repair. you could attempt taking the back off and checking all connectors and chips to confirm they are all tight and put in properly, yet in any different case, no longer lots you're able to do Sorry

sounds like a video card issue.
you can try going to your computers website, checking to see if they have a video or monitor driver update. just search computer name and model for drivers and support. or go to there main website that offers support.
if you installed a video card visit there site.
