the battery will usually last three to four years

the rest depends on how much you use it and how soon MicroSoft ceases supporting your o/s and software.

my wife's Toshiba is used heavily for hours a day, is only 2 years old, and now has so many little problems [F2 key broke off, the start key doesn't work, etc.] that we're about to decide it is dead and buy a new one.

does this help?

That depends on useage but typically it should last as long as it has a good System Board battery.
