silly question i know, but it was a background for a quarrel, where i backed up the version that if one is downhill the snake might "jump" and bite. so anyone can give me any detail about this

Snakes are strong, and can lift their bodies easily to strike.

I don't think it matters. It will probably strike whichever target is closest, and is more in its line of site. You might be somewhat safe if you are well behind it and it does not see you. Out of striking range, it will most likely slither off to escape.

Snakes cannot jump. Unless the hill is REALLY steep, it won't matter enough to change your odds.

first snakes don't attack unless provoked, but should they be forced to defend themselves it wouldn't matter, they cannot "jump" so your theory is out, and they are strong enough to easily lift thier body and strike up or down
