Someone asked a question about why a certain ethnic group of people have a particular physical characterisic. Many responders called that person a racist.

Is stereotyping a form of racism? What is the fundamental difference between the two?

Many sterotypes are true. "irish people love to drink"-yes, drinking guinness in the pub is a huge part of their culture. "African americans love ribs" - anyone who has visited down south in the summer knows this is in fact true. etc.. etc.. the list goes on forever. It really depends if the stereotype is being used as a tool of racism.

Bottom line is, if someone doesn't like you just because you look different or "appear" to be different, to me that is a part of stereotyping people for the purpose of hate and therein lies the foundation of racism.

You can't typically stereotype someone without being racist.
Fundamental difference would be that one is a perception based on fear while the other is a blagrant disregard for human rights. The common element is Hate.

Stereotyping: A manifestation of prejudice. The act of attributing certain traits to any person in a group without regard to indiividual differences. ("all" statements)

Racism: The belief that humans are subdivided into distinct hereditary groups, and are innately different in their social, behavioral, and mental capacities, and therefore can be ranked as superior or inferior.

Asking why people look differently is not racist. Asking that question to prove why they are inferior can be looked at as racist.

A stereotype is a characteristic that a racist will say that all of the people in that particular group have. A racist is a person that uses stereotypes to prejudge people in a particular race. Now a person that uses stereotypes to describe people in a group that is not related to race (such a religion or sexual orientation). They are considered prejudiced, but not racist.
