Actually, probably even worse than than, I live in one room in someone else's house with so-called kitchen and bathroom privileges. At my age, this is NOT a fun situation, and trying to live my entire life in one room is truly the PITS.
And I have at times been so broke that I've had to find all the pennies I have just to get something to eat at the 99 cent store.
Yes, sometimes it is very depressing, but I AM getting through it by reminding myself that this is only temporary. It could be worse ... I could be on the streets. At least I have a roof over my head and can take a shower and can cook even under the limited conditions.
I keep my sanity by continuing to work to get out of this situation and ABOVE ALL reminding myself that THIS TOO SHALL PASS.

I found that staying busy with some type of a project tends to keep the depression at bay. When there were no projects to be done, simply observing & listening to other people make me realize that my own problems aren't as severe as other peoples are! I currently live in government subsidized housing & although I enjoy having a bathroom to myself in my SRO (Single Room Occupancy), I don't enjoy living around so many people who are getting the same amount of monthly disability payments from the Federal Government & continue to abuse alcohol, drugs, & nicotine! Sometimes, you just can't afford to pick your neighbors when you become physically disabled & can no longer work for a living! It IS better than doing the "Shelter Shuffle", where you must change locations on a daily basis if you want to sleep in a folding cot that is off the cold floor!

Do you have food and a dry place to sleep? Growing up I had to carry in wood for the night, water to drink or bath, and go to a outhouse. The house was so cold in the winter that in froze the water in the bucket in the kitchen where we kept a fire. You talk about a crummy apartment with running water and indoor plumbing. You have to know the people you are asking the questions of. The world is a hard place but you know I don't know how I could survive without my ac.

me and my husband have been living in a dark little basement apt. for the last 4 years. It's our first place. the rent is hella cheap and we don't have to pay for anything but our phone bill. My land lord pays for gas, sewer, water, garbage, electricity, and we get premium cable for free. we didn't need a credit check, we didn't even have to put a deposit down or pay the first and last months rent. I think we've stayed there so long because where are we ever gonna find a deal like that again? Plus my land lord is hella cool. If we are a couple days late with rent she doesn't trip. It's just that our apt. is hella small and it's always soo dark since it's in a basement...but it's cool in the summertime. My kitchen is TINY and we only have one sink so doing the dishes sucks I'm used to at least a double sink. And I have to lug all our laundry to my mom's house so that sucks too. But we decorate and try to be happy with what we have. A can of paint or some wallpaper does wonders. But yes it is depressing! But when I get blue my husband shouts "We live like KINGS I tell you!!" and he makes me laugh. It's better then the streets! I want to move and we will...someday when we have kids I guess.

Yes, I've been there. What got me through it is getting up every day and going to work and knowing I was getting out of there SOON. Once you get a decent apartment you will appreciate it SO much. Hang in there - keep getting up and going to work - save for that deposit and first months rent! YOU CAN DO IT!

Yep. Get out of the house and go someplace free like the library not associated with where you're at or the people where you're at.
