Jehovah's Witnesses.
Witnesses prey upon desperate people. They start with a kernel of truth. Life sucks, huh? Look at all the evil in the world... just watch the evening news.
Agree?
Well, guess what? The only key to salvation (a better life after this one) is to do exactly what the Watchtower says.
And what do they say? Spend all of your time reading only their literature... and convincing others to do the same.
Knowing that the Bible is well-respected by many multitudes, they've taken it apart and put it back together in a way that suits their needs. Hence, using their version, they can convince you that God is on their side, and their side only. Convenient, isn't it? God wants you to do exactly what the Watchtower says. Many other religions do this too, but the Witnesses take it so much further....
Serious fear tactics are used to keep anyone from straying once they've been hooked. Aside from eternal death, should you decide to stop selling for them, you will also be "shunned" by all of your friends and family within the organization. They will be told to cease all contact with you, under pain of ex-communication themselves. And if you've been involved long enough, it's not like you have any other hobbies or friends, because their guidelines specifically discourage you from joining secular organizations or fraternizing with those outside the congregation. No Little League, no bowling leagues... they want you spending all of your time going door to door working for them. The children of Witnesses are told not to join extra-curricular activities at school! A well-rounded individual just might catch on that they're full of sh1t... and they can't have that, now can they? So should you choose to extricate yourself (once you've been baptised), you not only lose your religion, you lose pretty much your entire life.
They also discourage you from furthering your education or working to make this world a better place. Their logic? We're not living for this life, we're living for the next one. We can't make this world better, so why try? Why should you strive to be a doctor? This life is temporary and destined to end in doom, so you need to focus on working towards the next one. The last thing they want is for you to realize that maybe you could be happy in this lifetime, maybe if we all worked together we could build a better society for all. Instead they want you to be unsuccessful and miserable so you will continue peddling their garbage to others in a desperate gamble to make God's good list and enjoy a peaceul afterlife.
What exactly is their goal with all this nonsense? I'll give you a hint. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society is a publishing company... and they're filthy rich.
Their people not only give them money, but do ALL of the work for free! Even though their publications are technically "free" with suggested donations, there's no major problem there, because they can easily convince you that God wants you to give them that money... every week for the rest of your life... and they have NO overhead! Their buildings are built by volunteers, their presses are run by volunteers, their equipment is furnished by donated dollars... the food that the volunteers eat is provided by.... you guessed it: volunteers and donations. (For the record, they used to charge for their books and magazines, but to remain tax-free as a non-profit organization, they had to switch to suggesting donations.... again, no problem: if you're a Witness, God wants you to donate... whether you have food on your table or not. This life is not the important one, so give us your money.)
Imagine People Magazine convincing the world that they have to donate time, materials, real estate, labor, etc to keep them publishing, and that their very souls not only depend upon maintaining a lifelong subscription, but upon selling lifelong subscriptions to others also. The entire Watchtower Bible and Tract Society is run by duped humans working for free because they think God wants them to. Handy way for an organization to get filthy rich, huh? Not exactly noble, but certainly not stupid.
They've got brainwashing down to a science.
If there IS a Satan, I'm sure the inception of the Watchtower is one of his proudest moments.
