I was look at my fish every day for about 5-10 minutes, just to see if everything is going OK. While looking at my Betta Fish he opened his mouth really wide then closed it, and no he didn't go up for air. He did this about a couple of times already. Also lately my Betta has been flaring a lot at me for no reason. Maybe the two are connected somehow?
I know fish don't sleep they 'rest' so I thought maybe my fish is yawning, so I turned off my tank's light and now my Betta Fish is in the little hole under his castle. Is this normal or is this some sort of diesase? He didn't do something like this before, I just got him about a little less than a month ago, and yesterday I did my weekly water change. Maybe it was because of that?
Sorry, but I can't get a picture for you because my Betta does it pretty fast.
Can you please help?
Thanks!

My Betta "yawns" after I feed him bloodworms, but that is just spitting up any part of the food he didn't like. It looks like they thrust their jaw outwards, but it is not yawning. Yawning is often associated with emotions, but because fish don't have emotions, that is not the case. Flaring is caused by stress, and yawning is thought to be caused by nervousness, so, maybe the flaring is stressing the Betta and making him nervous, leading to a "fishy yawn"... I don't think anybody is going to be able to tell you why the fish is yawning, but there will be a lot of guesses...

Hi, I don't have any experience of Bettas but I do have 5 streamlined Goldfish & they will occasionally yawn really wide-this is almost always accompanied by them flaring all their fins & tail to the fullest extent. While I offer no scientific evidence for my theory I am almost certain this is similar to when we yawn & stretch our arms out, arching our backs or when you see dogs yawn & stretch their legs out in front of them-just having a nice stretch & nothing to worry about, they are almost certainly enjoying it!

Maybe he thinks you are staring at him too much and he's threatening you and that's why he flares at you? Or maybe he's mad at you because you aren't feeding him? Not that I think you don't feed him enough or anything, maybe he's just greedy. I don't know. Betta's have pretty definite personalities. It doesn't sound like anything is wrong with him though. I don't think they yawn.

The fish is "displaying." That is what see do when see other Bettas all of whom they consider enemies. Is there a mirror or anything it can see it's reflection in nearby? If yes, it will stimulate such behavior. They also do this to impress females when they want to breed.

He is just stretching his mouth, they probably do this to keep it in good shape for eating small fish or insects. My bettas do this and so do my cichlids so it nothing to worry about.
