That was Monica Seles , an American tennis player , who was a eight-time Grand Slam champion and the World No 1 from 1991-1992.Seles had a heated rivalry with Steffi Graf , and upto that point of time , she had beaten Graf in three of five Grand Slam matches with Graf .That was why she was stabbed ( between the shoulder blades ) by a deranged fan of Graf at a tournament in Hamburg. The guy was afterwards declared to be psycologically abnormal ,and while the physical injuries healed quite quickly , the psychological injuries didnt leave so soon.

Hope that helped!!!

It was definitely Monica Seles....who was an American but not a Swiss...I wonder why people think it happened to Martina Hinigs....Hingis retired at the age of 22 because of chronic foot and Knee injuries....that were hard to get healed........

Monica Seles was stabbed in back while playing a match....actually during a change over a man rushed from crowd and stabbed Monica.....She was so psychologically disturbed after that incident....Moinica decided not to play competitive Tennis for another 2 years.....Though she came back in 1995..she seemed to lack the flare she has earlier..that is the reason.....why many people think that if Monica would not have been stabbed in back...Steffi Graf , to whom Monica was a fierce challenger( something like Nadal to Roger these days,).....Steffi would not have these many slam titles..as she holds now.....

It was Monica Seles. She was stabbed by Gunter Parche (a German fan of Steffi Graf) in April of 1993 at the German Open when she was playing Maggie Maleeva. Sadly enough he served no time for the horrible crime he committed against Monica. As a result Monica never returned to Germany to play tennis and chose to miss the Sanex WTA Tour Championship (it has since become the Sony WTA Tour) when it was played there as well.

However, everything changed following an incident that shocked the tennis world on April 30, 1993. During a quarterfinal match with Magdalena Maleeva in Hamburg that Seles was leading in 6-4, 4-3, a 38-year-old deranged fan of Graf, Günter Parche, ran from the middle of the crowd to the edge of the court during a break between games and plunged a steak knife between Seles' shoulder blades. She let out a piercing scream and was quickly rushed to a hospital. Her physical injuries took a few weeks to heal, but the psychological scars from this incident left a much deeper impression on Seles. She did not return to competitive tennis for over two years. Parche was charged following the incident but was not jailed because he was found to be psychologically abnormal and was instead sentenced to two years' probation and psychological treatment. The incident prompted a significant increase in the level of security at tour events. She vowed never to play tennis in Germany again.

Monica Seles.... The moron who did it changed the history of women's tennis. Steffi Graf, would have had about 5 or 6 less *majors, I believe, if the stabbing hadn't occured. A sad time it was for tennis..............(.* conservative estimate.)

Monica Seles was stabbed sometime during '92-'93 by
an idiot.

I hope that idiot is behind bar for life and should never see the
daylight again and be at any sporting events.
